City of Amsterdam

City of Amsterdam

There is something special about Amsterdam!

The city's canals and stately gabled mansions are lovely, but it's the flavour of the city that appeals most — its residents are a dynamic and imaginative, lighting up the whole town.

Here is our compilation of the solid reasons to visit Amsterdam:

🖼 The contemporary art scene in Amsterdam is exciting, as it is blessed with top-ranking museums and private art galleries

Amsterdam is museum nirvana!

  • Rijksmuseum is the Netherlands' most prestigious museum of Dutch national art including works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh.
  • Stedelijk, which may appear to be a huge bathtub from the outside, but the show displayed are avant-garde and highly rated.
  • Van Gogh Museum holds the largest works of art of the artist.
  • Rembrandt House Museum is a reconstruction of the Rembrandt’s rooms and of his workshop.
  • Amsterdam is also blessed with two top-ranking photography museums, Huis Marseille and Foam and a huge variety of art galleries and exhibitions.

🏛 Amsterdam’s modern architecture reflects a sensitive approach to the city design

Almost without exception, Amsterdam has dodged the soaring skyscrapers that have scarred so many cities, opting instead for a much more organic approach – citizen-sensitive development at its best. In the city centre, the prime example is the Eye Film Museum, housed in a graceful, shimmering structure with sleek angular lines. Away from the centre, the Het Schip municipal housing estate is a high-spec, early 20th-century development in a flourishing Expressionistic style, while the reclaimed islands of the Oosterdok abound with stylish houses and apartments offering gentle canal and river views.

⚓️ The beauty of Amsterdam’s canals, a network of narrow waterways that surpass every expectation and rival Venice in their historic charm

Amsterdam isn't called the "Venice of the North" for nothing - the city has 165 canals spanning more than 60 miles (and 1281 bridges - three times that of Venice!). Built during the 17th century when Amsterdam was a small fishing town, the canal ring was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. Cruising Amsterdam's canals, whether by private boat or traditional canal cruise, is a must-do.

“Amsterdam is like the rings of a tree: It gets older as you get closer to the center.” -John Green

🚲 The most bike-friendly city in the world

Hop on a two-wheeler and ride around the Amsterdam! With nearly 500 miles of cycle paths and bike lanes, biking in Amsterdam is by far the most popular (and efficient) way to get around. You can rent a bike from any one of the numerous bike rental companies around the city for a day rate, or you can take a guided cycle tour.
